Mark Henry

I’ve found his insight…different.  Still fairly new to his blog though.  Will give further info as time goes on.  Though, I’m thinking if you like Zombies…he’s probably going to be a win for you.  Just a thought.

Nothing new to report

November 5th, 2009 by Thomas

Nope, sorry folks.  Been kinda sick and kinda busy today.  Tomorrow should show some real progress on DRC with any luck.  I am shooting to break the 10000 mark by close of business tomorrow.  Wish me luck.

Inspiring minds deserve praise

November 4th, 2009 by Thomas

I’ve just read one of the most horrific posts I’ve ever laid eyes on.  I will not say to who this post belongs, but it was spine chilling to say the least.  Which got me thinking, during this National Novel Writing Month thing is a perfect time for it as well.

Who inspired you to write, or who continues to inspire you to continue writing or both.  If writing brings you joy, and peace (as it does me) then shouldn’t their names be praised.  No, I don’t mean praised as in worshiped like a god, I mean praised as in thankful for them.  Yes, we buy their books, and read their blogs, and even repost, link to or retweet things for them, but have we ever told them (if they are still around at least) that it is they that made us go hmmm maybe I should give this a try.  So, in honor of this thought I post this…

To Caitlin Kittredge it was your book Second Skin that really put the writing bug in my mind.  I so enjoyed that read.  I have read many a book, as most writers and most of your other fans have, but none that moved me in personal way like that one.  At the time I had no idea what had happened, or how to even word it.  But, it seems of late the words have a way of just coming out, and it’s hard to stop them at times.  Thus, joining NaNoWriMo, and creating a blog, and starting short story contests all with in the last oh 4 to 6 months.  The characters flew off the page and came to life for me in a way that had never happened.  Yes, I know, it was one of your very first books, but none-the-less it was fantastic in this reader’s eyes.  And, I don’t really know if I have ever said Thank you for what you’ve done, or continue to do.  And, in a not so stalkerish manner, I would like to do that.  So, this is me saying Thank you Caitlin, in front of the world.  I could go on and on about what it’s been like for me since I’ve started writing, and perhaps someday my work will be published, but until then I just enjoy the process.  It has really given my life a whole new direction.

The other author who has continued to inspire me is, and you probably guessed it, Cherie Priest.  While I have only recently purchased one of her books, which she signed for me (read: delighted), her blog has kept me interested and motivated at times when I thought this was a dumb idea*.   To the point that, in an awkward sort of way, I stole her blog.  I knew I wanted to keep a blog, especially after reading hers, but was unsure on how to start.  So, imitation is the highest form of flattery right…so don’t be too surprised to see my first few posts and other tidbits very similar to hers.  Sorry Cherie, I didn’t mean to steal it, and I promise it will change…if it hasn’t all ready.

I stumbled onto Cherie through Caitlin’s blog and combined they made a powerful team, to which they were probably quite unaware.  So, thanks also go out to Cherie as one of only two authors who have made me want to write again.

So, there you have it folks, a homage to those who inspired me.  Now, this could be good, or bad for the public if I ever get published, but for me personally in my life, it was a very good thing.  To which both I am eternally grateful.

So, who has inspired you?  Have you told them so?  If not, in some way I hope you do.  There should be a Author appreciation day I think….what say you?  I mean really … were would this world be with out the written word?  Both fiction and non-fiction, both outstanding work and the mediocre, both published, and unpublished…seriously…were would we be?  Ponder that writers and readers…ponder that.

*yeah…did you ever think that as well…I’d like to know.

Scribefire

November 4th, 2009 by Thomas

This is a test of the emergency posting system Scribefire.  This is only a test.  Had this been a real post there would be something to read that is about as interesting as this.  Scribefire will allow me to post without the hassle of logging in to my wordpress account, or the cumbersome email approach, which I have not tried yet.  If you are reading this than Scribefire has accomplished its mission.

In other news, I have another 1000 or so words added to DRC, and am working towards making the 2000 word goal by the end of the day.  I had to stop the flow to take my son to the doctor to have his cast removed (he broke his wrist about a month ago).  All is well now, and hopefully will return to writing after the list of errands I have are complete.  This may be the only post I make today.  Cheers.

Interesting question posed..

November 3rd, 2009 by Thomas

So, I’ve been asked how I write.  Not that I’m a professional, nor that I’m even that great.  But, ever since NanoWrimo has started I’ve been asked several different questions, and this one struck me as more interesting than the rest.  So, I thought I would share with whom ever decides to actually read my blog.

I would characterize my style as straight through.  Shoot from the hip sort-a-speak.  I have the general idea all mustered in my head, then I sit in from of my WP and look at the black blinking cursor just waiting for me to decide how to start.  Then, I start with a really bad opener, and away I go.  There is no outline, no dialogue spine, not even a sketched rough draft of the idea written down on a bar napkin.  Nope, just me and the open page.  I would relate it to a joy ride.  You have the car, you have the road, you know that by putting the two together could be a lot of fun, or simply a waste of time, or perhaps even dangerous, but you drive forward anyway.  You don’t need a stickin map, for what, you don’t even have a destination.  So, that is how I write.  Once the first draft, or perhaps a better term draft Zero is complete I can then go back, and outline my trip.  Cut out the parts that weren’t that relevant, let some air out of the tires so the plot can pick up speed, and even perhaps change the driver or passengers.  So, there you have it in a nutshell.  Perhaps not the most sophisticated method, maybe even not all that wise, but thats how I do it…for now.  Once I reach my first ending, I may change and actually purchase a map along the way.

Good luck to all the nanos out there.

Progress Meters

November 2nd, 2009 by Thomas

OK, I have fiddled with some progress meters and decided to go with ProgPress, simply because it allows more than one project to be listed as a time.  I figured out how to use the CSS for the progress bar color, but…ahem…I would like to change the title font and color.  Any suggestions?  Other than that I think ProgPress is an awesome tool for us you like to see our progress in visual detail.  Nicely done Jason Penny.  So, ignore the post below with the other Progmeter in it…that will be the last post…all other progress will be on the left.  Cheers.
